A Sneak Peek In the Life Of A Successful Fitness Blogger

To help scratch our own itch for a bit of a vicarious thrill, we spoke to Camilla Akerberg, hoping she’d give us the inside scoop on what it’s like to be a fitness blogger. And she did.

Have you ever wondered what it’s like to be a fitness blogger?

If you haven’t, we struggle to wonder why. Look at it this way: they get attention, money, and free products in exchange for their fit, sexy bodies. On top of that, their own fitness is built into their career. It’s likely easier to hold yourself accountable to a healthy workout program when your income relies on it! Man, we went into the wrong line of work . . .

Anyway, we digress. To help scratch our own itch for a bit of a vicarious thrill, we spoke to Camilla Akerberg, hoping she’d give us the inside scoop on what it’s like to be a fitness blogger. And she did.

1. What made you want to become a fitness blogger?

Becoming a fitness blogger wasn’t anything I had planned to do. I was just doing my thing, enjoying my own training on the side of my university studies, and I started to share my journey on Instagram.

Initially, Instagram was a tool for myself to help me keep myself accountable, and I used it to track my progress and results. Suddenly I had a lot of people interested in my journey and I started to gain a lot of followers. It took some time before I realized the impact I had on the people who were following me and it gave me a purpose to continue what I was doing.

After finishing my science degree, I took training and nutrition to the next level and completed my certificates and qualifications to be able to help others. Through my online nutrition transformation program and training plans I am now able to help people with their fitness goals all around the world, and I am so proud of this!

2. Finding workout motivation can sometimes be difficult — how to you find yours?

There are many ways to stay motivated!

For me, I have always been very goal focused, and I work hard on the things I want. Practicing on goal setting and sticking to your plan in all areas of life will greatly help you with your fitness journey as well. Another little trick — I have always used Instagram as a tool to keep myself accountable.

Sharing your own journey with other people will automatically motivate you.

I also love getting inspiration from other fitness bloggers, and days when I am low on energy I get my friends to help me motivate me. Doing a workout with a friend is always really fun; it mixes up your workouts and you are able to push each other.

3. What were you doing prior to becoming an influencer in your niche?

Training and nutrition has always been a passion of mine, and I was interested in that long before I started posting about my journey on Instagram. Before becoming a personal trainer, fitness coach and performance nutrition coach, I was studying Marine Science in Queensland, Australia.

4. Solving the mystery: what’s the most effective way to beat food cravings (especially at midnight)?

Go to bed early! 🙂 Ha ha, that is actually the best trick to defeat midnight cravings.

But in all seriousness, if you are one to crave junk late at night, try to make sure your dinner contains lots of fiber from greens and vegetables, lean proteins and healthy fats to keep you full for longer. Cravings can mean many different things — it can solely be a bad habit of you being used to treating yourself. Or, it can be a signal of your body lacking a specific nutrient.

Try taking a multivitamin and fuel your body with nutritious foods throughout the day, and make the decision that you won’t snack. After all, your mind steers your actions. Some tricks that can help you stick to your goal: Not having any junk food in your house, drink plenty of water, even sip on BCAAs, or — if you really really need your late snack — plan this into your diet and prepare clean options.

5. What do you see people expect from you as a fitness coach and influencer?

As a fitness coach and influencer, I think people expect me to be true to myself and my brand.

I only work with, and endorse, brands that I believe in, and would never claim that I look the way I do because of a waist trainer or similar. Staying fit takes work, and I don’t take any shortcuts.

Leading by example is important.

6. What was the biggest milestone of your career so far?

I was very proud to release my Nutrition transformation program which took months and months of research and writing to develop. The four ‘Nutrition For You’ eBooks teaches you more about your own body, how much you should be eating, and of what — according to your body type and goal to reach your health and fitness goals. It has all been approved by a doctor, and I am just extremely proud of the end product and the way it can help people!

Another career milestone is my work as a fitness retreat trainer and having the opportunity to be flown across the world to work as a trainer at different retreats. There is nothing better than spending a week in paradise, training the retreat crew and sharing my knowledge about nutrition and health with everyone there, eating healthy food and exploring with the group of people from all around the world!

The last couple of years I have worked at retreats in Greece, and I am looking forward to more of them this year!

7. How do you manage to stay engaged with your audience?

Believe me, staying engaged and on top with everything social media does takes a lot of work and time! Like any job, this is part of my work for me. For me, just like with a successful diet or training program — I plan ahead and stay prepared. That’s a big key factor for me!

8. What are your favorite hobbies, besides working out?

I love traveling, hiking, stand-up-paddleboarding, wakeboarding, scuba diving (I’m a PADI Divemaster), spending time with friends and family and then I love to draw and paint.
